How to set up email in Mozilla Thunderbird
Published on November 4, 2026 8 min read
Set up your email address in Mozilla Thunderbird: automatic or manual IMAP setup, server names and ports, and fixes for login and sending problems.
To set up your LJPc hosting email address in Mozilla Thunderbird, open the menu (the three lines), choose Add Account and then Email, and enter your name and email address. If we manage your domain's DNS, Thunderbird finds the settings on our mail server ljpc.email and asks whether you want to use them. If it does not, or you prefer to enter them yourself, choose IMAP with server ljpc.email, SSL/TLS on port 993 for incoming and port 465 for outgoing mail, and your full email address as the username.
What you need
- Your full email address, for example name@yourcompany.com.
- The password of that email address. Lost it? Set a new one in the customer portal, as explained further down.
- Thunderbird on your computer. It is free for Windows, macOS and Linux and you can download it from thunderbird.net.
Tip: sign in to webmail at ljpc.email first. If that works, you know your password is right before you set up Thunderbird.
How to set up email in Thunderbird
These steps apply to Thunderbird 150 and later, including the extended support release (ESR 153), where you add accounts in the Account Hub. Mozilla explains it in its Account Hub guide.
- Open Thunderbird. On first start the Account Hub opens by itself. If you already have an account, click the menu (the three lines) at the top right, choose Add Account and then Email.
- Under Full name, enter the name recipients see as the sender, and under Email address your full email address. Click Continue.
- Thunderbird looks up the settings. If we manage your domain's DNS, Thunderbird shows Setup information found on 3rd party domain and asks whether you want to continue with ljpc.email. That is correct: ljpc.email is our mail server. Check that it says ljpc.email and click Continue.
- Thunderbird shows the settings it found. Choose IMAP and check that ljpc.email is the server for both incoming and outgoing mail. Click Continue.
- Enter the password of your email address. Tick Remember password if you want Thunderbird to store it, then click Continue.
- Thunderbird tests the connection and creates the account. If it then offers to sync calendars and address books, click Skip. Finally, click Finish.
Your account now appears in the folder pane on the left and your mail arrives in the Inbox. Thunderbird may say it found a configuration for a Microsoft Exchange server. That is because we publish the settings with the same standard Outlook uses. Your account is set up as an IMAP account on ljpc.email.
On a version older than 150 you get a window with the same fields for name, email address and password, and you finish with Done. We recommend updating to the latest version, which also gives you the latest security fixes.
Thunderbird can't find the settings? Enter them manually
If your domain's DNS is hosted elsewhere, or Thunderbird suggests a server other than ljpc.email, enter the servers yourself:
- On the first screen, click Manual configuration. If Thunderbird already shows settings it found, click Edit configuration.
- If Thunderbird asks for an account type, choose IMAP (Sync across devices).
- For the incoming server, enter: hostname ljpc.email, port 993, connection security SSL/TLS, authentication method Normal password and your full email address as the username.
- For the outgoing server, enter: hostname ljpc.email, port 465, connection security SSL/TLS, authentication method Normal password and the same username.
- Click Continue or Connect, enter your password and complete the steps.
Never choose None for connection security. With SSL/TLS your password travels to the server encrypted, even though the authentication method is called Normal password.
Thunderbird IMAP and SMTP settings at a glance
| Field in Thunderbird | Incoming server (IMAP) | Outgoing server (SMTP) |
|---|---|---|
| Hostname | ljpc.email | ljpc.email |
| Port | 993 | 465, or 587 |
| Connection security | SSL/TLS | SSL/TLS on 465, STARTTLS on 587 |
| Authentication method | Normal password | Normal password |
| Username | your full email address | your full email address |
If you choose POP3 instead, use server ljpc.email with SSL/TLS on port 995. Settings for other apps and devices are in set up your email on your phone, tablet and computer.
With LJPc hosting, every domain uses the same server name, ljpc.email, with a valid certificate. Your connection automatically reaches the server that holds your mailbox, and if our mail server goes down, a second server takes over automatically. If we manage your DNS, your domain already contains the record that lets Thunderbird and Outlook find the settings. You set up Thunderbird once.
IMAP or POP3: keeping your messages on the server
Choose IMAP. Your mail stays on the server, so Thunderbird, your phone and webmail all show the same messages and folders. Thunderbird also keeps a copy on your computer, so you can read your mail offline. Whatever you move or delete in Thunderbird changes on the server too.
With POP3, Thunderbird downloads your mail to your computer. If you use POP3 and want your messages to stay on the server as well:
- Open the menu (the three lines) and choose Account Settings.
- Under your account, click Server Settings.
- Tick Leave messages on server and choose Until I delete them, or For at most a number of days.
Mail on the server counts towards the storage of your hosting package. You can see how much space your mail uses in check your hosting storage usage.
Switching from POP3 to IMAP? Thunderbird cannot convert an existing account. Add your address again as an IMAP account, drag the messages from your POP3 account into the folders of the IMAP account, then remove the POP3 account. All your mail is then on the server and visible on every device.
Opening and reading your mail in Thunderbird
Once set up, your account appears in the folder pane on the left, with your Inbox, sent messages and other folders below it. Click a folder to see its messages and click a message to open it. The Get Messages button fetches new mail right away. Away from your own computer, you can read the same mail in your browser, as described in LJPc webmail: how to sign in and use it.
Changing Thunderbird's language to English or Dutch
Thunderbird starts in the language of the version you downloaded. To switch:
- Open the menu (the three lines) and choose Settings.
- Type language in the search field at the top of the settings.
- Under the language for menus and notifications, choose for example English or Nederlands. If your language is not listed, add it with the button next to it.
- Click Apply and Restart.
You can also download Thunderbird in the language you want from thunderbird.net. Your folders on the server stay the same when you change Thunderbird's language.
Changed your password? Update it in Thunderbird
You set a new password for your email address yourself in the customer portal: choose Services and Sites, click the site with the domain of your email address and, in the email addresses block, click the key icon next to your address. The full steps are in set up your email on your phone, tablet and computer.
Thunderbird then reports that the login to server ljpc.email failed. Click Enter New Password in that message and enter your new password. If the message does not appear, open Settings, Privacy & Security and, under Passwords, Saved Passwords. Remove the old passwords for ljpc.email there; Thunderbird asks for the new one next time. Update the password on your other devices as well, so they keep fetching your mail.
Thunderbird not working? How to fix it
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Thunderbird says authentication or login failed | Check that the username is your full email address. Test your password in webmail at ljpc.email. If that fails too, set a new password in the customer portal. |
| Receiving works, sending does not | Open Account Settings and click Outgoing Server at the bottom of the list. Check: server ljpc.email, SSL/TLS with port 465 or STARTTLS with port 587, Normal password and your full email address as the username. If it works on one network but not on another, try the other port. |
| A warning about an unverified certificate | Check that you entered ljpc.email and not another server name, such as mail.yourdomain.com. Do not add a certificate exception. |
| Thunderbird cannot find the settings | Enter the servers yourself with Manual configuration, as described above. |
| ljpc.email stops loading on your Wi-Fi while other websites work | If a program keeps signing in with a wrong password, we block that internet connection for half an hour after many failed attempts. This keeps intruders away from your mailbox. Update the password in Thunderbird and on your other devices; after half an hour the connection works again. If a device tried an address that does not exist, for example because of a typo in the username, the block lasts longer and we lift it for you. Read how this works in what is fail2ban. |

Moving your email to LJPc with Thunderbird
Moving your mail from another provider to LJPc? Thunderbird can help. Add both your old and your new address as IMAP accounts and drag your folders and messages from the old account to the new one. If new mail still arrives at your old server after the switch, your domain's MX record has not been updated everywhere yet. To plan the move without missing anything, read how to migrate email to a new server via IMAP and what is an MX record.

Frequently asked questions
What are the Thunderbird settings for LJPc hosting?
Choose IMAP with ljpc.email as the incoming server, port 993 and SSL/TLS. The outgoing server is also ljpc.email, with SSL/TLS on port 465 or STARTTLS on port 587. Choose Normal password for both and use your full email address as the username.
How do I add an email account in Thunderbird?
Click the menu with the three lines, choose Add Account and then Email. Enter your name and email address and click Continue. Confirm the settings from ljpc.email, choose IMAP, enter your password and click Finish.
Why does Thunderbird say the setup information was found on a 3rd party domain?
Thunderbird finds the settings for your address on ljpc.email, which is a different domain from the one in your email address. ljpc.email is the LJPc hosting mail server for every domain. If it says ljpc.email, click Continue.
How do I keep my messages on the IMAP server?
With IMAP your messages always stay on the server; Thunderbird only keeps a copy on your computer. If you use POP3, open Account Settings, Server Settings and tick Leave messages on server, with Until I delete them or a number of days.
How do I change the language of Thunderbird?
Open Settings from the menu and type language in the search field. Choose the language for menus and notifications, add it with the button next to it if needed and click Apply and Restart. You can also download Thunderbird in the language you want.
Why does new mail still arrive at my old server after a migration?
Your domain's MX record has not been updated everywhere yet. Other mail servers keep using the old address until the time to live (TTL) of the old record runs out. Keep your old account in Thunderbird until then and drag the last messages to your new account afterwards.
