How to set up email in Apple Mail on your Mac
Published on November 4, 2026 7 min read
Add your email address to Apple Mail on a Mac with IMAP: server names, ports and TLS/SSL, Mailbox Behaviors, and how to remove an account again.
To add your LJPc hosting email address to Apple Mail on a Mac, choose Mail > Add Account, enter your email address, pick IMAP and use ljpc.email as both the incoming and the outgoing mail server, with your full email address as the user name. To remove an account later, go to Mail > Settings > Accounts and click the Remove button. This guide covers both, plus the server settings and fixes for the most common problems. The steps are the same on an iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini or any other Mac.
Before you start
- Your full email address, for example name@yourcompany.com.
- The password of that address. Sign in to webmail at ljpc.email first: if that works, you know the password is right. Lost it? Set a new one in the customer portal, as described in set up your email on your phone, tablet and computer.
- The Mail app, which comes with every Mac.
How to add an email account to Mail on Mac
These steps follow Apple's Mail User Guide for macOS 27 Golden Gate and macOS Tahoe 26. Older versions look slightly different, as noted below.
- Open Mail and choose Mail > Add Account in the menu bar.
- Enter your full email address and click Continue. If Mail shows a list of providers such as iCloud and Google, choose Other Mail Account at the bottom. On macOS Sequoia 15 and earlier the list comes first: select Other Mail Account and click Continue.
- Enter the name recipients should see, your email address and its password.
- If Mail asks for more details, choose IMAP as the account type, enter your full email address as the user name and enter ljpc.email as both the incoming and the outgoing mail server.
- If Mail asks which apps should use the account, keep Mail selected and finish. Mail now downloads your messages and folders.
Mail usually picks the ports and encryption by itself. To check them, or if Mail can't connect, set them by hand as shown under Server Settings below.
Apple Mail IMAP and SMTP settings
| Field in Apple Mail | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Account type | IMAP |
| User Name | your full email address |
| Password | the password of your email address |
| Incoming mail server (Host Name) | ljpc.email |
| Incoming port | 993, with Use TLS/SSL on |
| Outgoing mail server (Host Name) | ljpc.email |
| Outgoing port | 465 (SSL/TLS) or 587 (STARTTLS), with Use TLS/SSL on |
| Authentication | Password, for incoming and outgoing |
We recommend IMAP: your mail stays on the server, so your Mac, your iPhone and webmail all show the same messages and folders. If you deliberately want to keep your mail on this Mac only, POP3 works with ljpc.email on port 995 (SSL/TLS). The difference is explained in set up your email on your phone, tablet and computer.
Set the port and TLS/SSL in Server Settings
- In Mail, choose Mail > Settings and click Accounts. On macOS Monterey 12 and earlier this is called Preferences.
- Select your account on the left and click Server Settings.
- For the incoming server, check the User Name (your full email address), the Password and the Host Name ljpc.email.
- Deselect Automatically manage connection settings. Enter 993 as the Port, turn on Use TLS/SSL and set Authentication to Password.
- Do the same for the outgoing (SMTP) server: host name ljpc.email, port 465, Use TLS/SSL on and authentication Password, with the same email address and password.
- Click Save.
This is also where you enter a new password after changing it in the customer portal. Apple lists every field in Change Server Settings in Mail on Mac.
Keep Sent, Drafts and Junk on the server
Our mail server marks which folder holds sent messages, drafts, deleted messages and junk, and Mail selects the best mailbox for your account. To make sure these folders live on the server, so they also show up in webmail and on your phone, open Mail > Settings > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors. For Drafts, Sent, Junk and Trash, choose a mailbox under your account, not under On My Mac.
Also set Mail to erase deleted messages after a while instead of Never. That keeps your Trash on the server from growing unnoticed, because your mail counts towards the storage of your hosting package.
How to remove an email account from Mail on Mac
- In Mail, choose Mail > Settings and click Accounts.
- Select the account you want to remove.
- Click the Remove button (the minus sign) below the list and confirm.
If other apps on your Mac use the account, such as Notes, Mail sends you to Internet Accounts. Choose Apple menu > System Settings and click Internet Accounts in the sidebar (System Preferences on older versions). Click the account and turn Mail off, or click Delete Account at the bottom and then OK to remove it from every app.
Only want to pause an account? Deselect Enable this account under Accounts, and select it again when you want your mail back. Using the same address on an iPhone or iPad? See how to remove an email account from your iPhone or iPad.
What happens to your email
| What you do | What happens to your mail |
|---|---|
| Remove the account from Mail (IMAP) | The messages are removed from your Mac. Your mail stays on the server, in webmail and on your other devices. |
| Remove the account from Mail (POP3) | Mail your Mac has already downloaded may exist only on this Mac. Move those messages to a mailbox under On My Mac or export them first. |
| Disable the account for now | Nothing changes to your mail. Mail stops checking for new messages until you enable the account again. |
| Close the email address at LJPc | The mailbox and all mail in it are deleted from the server, on every device. |
Not sure whether your mail is on the server? Sign in to webmail as described in LJPc webmail. If all your messages are there, you can remove the account with peace of mind. To stop using the address altogether, close it in the customer portal with the steps in create an email address in the customer portal.
Export mailboxes or move them to another server
Folders under On My Mac exist on this computer only. To take them with you:
- To your LJPc mailbox: drag the messages or the folder to a mailbox under your account. They are then stored on the server and show up in webmail and on your phone.
- As a file: select one or more mailboxes and choose Mailbox > Export Mailbox. Mail saves them as mbox files. On another Mac, bring them back with File > Import Mailboxes, which also imports mbox files from other email apps.
Moving a whole mailbox from another provider to LJPc hosting? Read how to migrate email to a new server first. Once your mail has moved, set the host name to ljpc.email under Server Settings, or add the account again with the steps above.
Mac Mail not working? Common fixes
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Mail keeps asking for your password | Test the password in webmail at ljpc.email. If it works there, enter it again under Server Settings, for incoming and outgoing. If webmail rejects it too, set a new password in the customer portal. |
| You can receive but not send | Check the outgoing server: host name ljpc.email, port 465 with Use TLS/SSL and authentication Password. If it works on one network and not on another, try port 587. |
| Mail can't verify the identity of the server | Make sure both servers are set to ljpc.email. Our certificate is issued for that name, so the warning goes away. |
| Folders appear twice, or sent mail is missing in webmail | Under Mailbox Behaviors, choose a mailbox under your account for each folder, as described above. |
| ljpc.email stops loading on your network while other sites still work | When a device keeps trying an old password, we block that internet connection for half an hour after many failed attempts. That keeps intruders away from your mailbox. Update the password on all your devices and the connection works again after half an hour. If a device tried an address that doesn't exist, the block lasts longer and we lift it for you. Read more in what is Fail2ban. |

What LJPc hosting takes care of
Your mail runs on our own mail servers at ljpc.email, with a valid certificate for an encrypted connection. If your hosting is with us, SPF, DKIM and DMARC are set up for your domain by default, so recipients can check that your mail really comes from you. Learn how that signature works in what is DKIM. You create new email addresses and change passwords yourself in the customer portal.

Frequently asked questions
How do I remove an email account from Mail on my Mac?
In Mail, choose Mail, then Settings, and click Accounts. Select the account and click the Remove button (the minus sign) below the list. If other apps use the account too, turn Mail off in System Settings under Internet Accounts, or click Delete Account there.
Will I lose my email if I remove an account from Apple Mail?
Not with an IMAP account: the messages are removed from your Mac but stay on the server, so you can still read them in webmail and on your other devices. If you use POP3, move the downloaded mail to a mailbox under On My Mac or export it first.
What are the Apple Mail settings for LJPc hosting?
Choose IMAP and enter ljpc.email as both the incoming and the outgoing server. Use port 993 for incoming mail and port 465 or 587 for outgoing mail, with Use TLS/SSL on and Authentication set to Password. Your user name is your full email address.
Do these steps work on an iMac or MacBook?
Yes. The Mail app is the same on every Mac, so the steps apply to an iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini. Only the first screen differs between macOS versions: on macOS Sequoia and earlier you choose Other Mail Account first.
How do I export mailboxes from Apple Mail?
Select the mailboxes and choose Mailbox, then Export Mailbox. Mail saves them as mbox files, which you can bring back with File, Import Mailboxes. To store them on your mail server instead, drag the messages to a mailbox under your LJPc account.
Why does Mail on my Mac keep asking for my password?
Usually Mail has an old or wrong password saved. Test the password in webmail at ljpc.email, then enter it again under Server Settings for both incoming and outgoing mail. If webmail rejects it too, set a new password in the customer portal.
