How to remove an email account from your iPhone or iPad
Published on November 4, 2026 4 min read
Delete a mail account from your iPhone or iPad in a few taps, keep your mail on the server, and fix a missing Delete Account button.
To remove an email account from your iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts, tap the account and tap Delete Account. This only removes the account from your iPhone: your email address keeps working and, with IMAP, all your mail stays on the server. If there is no Delete Account button, the account was usually installed with a profile, which you remove in Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
Delete an email account on iPhone, step by step
These steps apply to iOS 18, iOS 26 and iOS 27, and to any account in Apple's Mail app: your LJPc address, but also Gmail, Outlook.com or a work address.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Apps, then Mail.
- Tap Mail Accounts to see every account on your iPhone.
- Tap the account you want to remove.
- Tap Delete Account. For some accounts the button is called Sign Out.
- Confirm that you want to remove the account from your iPhone.
The account disappears from Mail and from the other apps that used it, such as Calendar and Contacts. On iOS 17 or earlier, you find your accounts under Settings > Mail > Accounts. Apple describes the same steps in the iPhone User Guide.
No Delete Account button? How to fix it
If the account has no Delete Account button, or the button does nothing, one of these is usually the cause.
The account came with a profile
An account that was installed with a configuration profile is removed through that profile. This applies to the email profile from our knowledge base and to profiles from your work or school.
- Open Settings and tap General.
- Tap VPN & Device Management.
- Tap the profile. The email profile from our knowledge base carries your address in its name, for example name@yourdomain.com email configuration.
- Tap Delete Profile and follow the instructions on screen.
Removing the profile also removes its mail account and settings from your iPhone. You can always remove the LJPc email profile yourself. A profile from your employer or school may be locked: ask your IT administrator to remove it for you.
Screen Time blocks account changes
Screen Time can block changes to accounts, for example on a child's iPhone. Open Settings, tap Screen Time, then Content & Privacy Restrictions, and check whether account changes are allowed. If someone else manages Screen Time for you, for example through Family Sharing, they can change it for you.
It is your iCloud address
Your iCloud mail belongs to your Apple Account. To stop using it on this iPhone, tap iCloud in Mail Accounts and turn off Use on this iPhone.
Remove an email account from iPad
On an iPad with iPadOS 18, 26 or 27 the steps are the same: Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts, tap the account and choose Delete Account. Profiles are under Settings > General > VPN & Device Management on the iPad as well. You remove an account per device: taking it off your iPhone leaves it on your iPad.
Remove an Outlook account from iPhone
How you remove an Outlook account depends on the app you use it in.
- In Apple's Mail app, for example an Outlook.com or Hotmail address: follow the steps at the top of this article.
- In Microsoft's Outlook app: open Settings in the app, tap the account under Accounts and tap Remove Account, as described in Microsoft's help article.
Either way, you only take the account off your iPhone. Your Microsoft account stays as it is. To remove an account from Outlook on your computer, see how to set up and remove an email account in Outlook.
What happens to your mail
Removing an account from your iPhone is not the same as closing your email address. This overview shows the difference:
| What you do | Where | What happens to your mail |
|---|---|---|
| Remove the account from your iPhone or iPad | Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts | Gone from this device. With IMAP everything stays on the server, in webmail and on your other devices. |
| Turn the account off for a while | Mail Accounts, the Mail switch of the account | You stop sending and receiving mail with it for now and can turn it back on at any time. |
| Remove a profile | Settings > General > VPN & Device Management | The account from the profile leaves the device. Your mail stays on the server. |
| Close your LJPc email address | Customer portal, bin icon next to the address | The mailbox and all mail in it are removed from the server, on every device. |
With IMAP, which our email profile uses and which we recommend, your mail lives on the server. After removing the account you can still read it in webmail at ljpc.email and on your other devices. If the account was ever set up with POP3, mail that was already downloaded to your iPhone may only exist on that device. Check webmail first to see whether your messages are there. If something is missing, keep the account for now and contact us: we will look into it with you.
Lost iPhone, sold iPhone or a former employee
If you no longer have the device, you cannot remove the account from it yourself. Change the password of the email address in the customer portal instead:
- Log in and choose Services and then Sites in the menu.
- Click the site with the domain of the email address.
- In the Email addresses block, click the key icon next to the address, enter a new password twice and click Save.
From then on, that device can no longer fetch or send mail with this address. Enter the new password on the devices you keep using; set up your email on your phone, tablet and computer shows how. To keep receiving a former employee's mail, forward the address to a colleague with email forwarding and aliases. Selling or giving away your iPhone? Erase it first with Apple's steps in sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone.
Close your email address completely
If you no longer need the address itself, close it in the customer portal. In the Email addresses block, click the bin icon next to the address and confirm. The mailbox and all mail in it are then removed from the server, so move any mail you want to keep first. The steps are in create an email address in the customer portal. Then remove the account from your iPhone and iPad as well, so your devices stop trying to fetch mail.
Set up the account again later
Want your mail back on your iPhone or iPad, or did you remove the account to set it up fresh? Our email profile puts every setting in place in a few taps. You find the profile and the manual steps in set up your email on your phone, tablet and computer.
Do you also use the address on your Mac? Remove it there with the steps in how to set up email in Apple Mail on your Mac.

Frequently asked questions
Will I lose my emails if I delete the account from my iPhone?
Not with IMAP. Your mail stays on the server, so you can still read it in webmail at ljpc.email and on your other devices. If you used POP3, check webmail first to make sure all your messages are there.
Why is there no Delete Account button?
The account was most likely installed with a profile. Remove the profile in Settings, General, VPN & Device Management. If there is no profile, check whether Screen Time blocks account changes.
How do I remove an Outlook account from my iPhone?
In Apple's Mail app, go to Settings, Apps, Mail, Mail Accounts, tap the account and choose Delete Account. In the Outlook app, open Settings in the app, tap the account and choose Remove Account.
Does removing the account delete my email address?
No. Your email address keeps existing and keeps receiving mail. You close an LJPc address in the customer portal with the bin icon next to the address.
Is it the same on an iPad?
Yes. On the iPad you also go to Settings, Apps, Mail, Mail Accounts, tap the account and choose Delete Account. The account stays on your other devices until you remove it there too.
Can I add the account again later?
Yes. The email profile from our knowledge base puts your LJPc address back on your iPhone or iPad in a few taps, and the same article lists the manual settings.
