Add your email address to Mailspring on Windows, macOS or Linux: IMAP and SMTP servers, ports and security, plus fixes for common connection errors.

To add your LJPc hosting email address to Mailspring, choose IMAP / SMTP as the account type and enter ljpc.email as both the incoming and the outgoing server: port 993 for IMAP and port 465 for SMTP, both with SSL / TLS. Your username is your full email address and your password is the password of that address. This guide covers installing Mailspring, every screen you will see during setup and how to fix the most common connection errors.

What is Mailspring?

Mailspring is a free, open source email client for Windows, macOS and Linux. It is actively maintained: version 1.26.2 was released on 22 October 2026. Mailspring connects to your mailbox over IMAP, so your messages and folders stay on the server and look the same on your phone, your computer and in webmail.

The free version is all you need for your LJPc email. Mailspring Pro costs 8 dollars a month and adds extras such as send later, templates, follow-up reminders, read receipts and link tracking. You only need a Mailspring ID (an account with the makers of Mailspring) for those extras, so you can skip it during setup.

Download and install Mailspring

Get the installer from the Mailspring download page:

  • Windows: one download for Windows 11 that runs on Intel and AMD PCs as well as ARM laptops. Open the downloaded file to install Mailspring.
  • macOS: pick the Apple Silicon build for a Mac with an M-series chip, or the Intel build for an older Mac, and move Mailspring to your Applications folder.
  • Linux: choose the Snap, the Flatpak from Flathub, or a .deb or .rpm package for x64 or ARM.

Before you start

  • Your full email address, for example name@yourcompany.com.
  • The password of that address. Lost it? Set a new one in the customer portal, as explained further down.
  • An address that already exists. Mailspring reads and sends your email but cannot create new addresses. You create an address on your own domain in the customer portal, see create an email address in the customer portal.

Tip: sign in to webmail at ljpc.email first. If that works, you know your password is right before you set up Mailspring.

How to set up an IMAP account in Mailspring

  1. Open Mailspring and click Get Started. A short tour follows: click Next until the last slide, then Get Started again.
  2. On the Create a Mailspring ID page, click Skip for now at the bottom. If you already have a Mailspring ID, use Sign in instead.
  3. Under Connect an email account, choose the last option, IMAP / SMTP. Do not pick Gmail, Office 365 or Outlook.com, even if your email was hosted by Google or Microsoft before you moved to LJPc.
  4. Enter the name recipients should see under Name, your full email address under Email and the password of that address under Password. Click Continue.
  5. Mailspring now tries to detect your servers. If it finds them, you are done. Usually the Set up Account screen opens instead, with two columns and a guess such as imap.yourcompany.com and smtp.yourcompany.com. Replace those guesses in the next two steps.
  6. Under Incoming Mail (IMAP), set Server to ljpc.email, Port to 993 and Security to SSL / TLS. Username is your full email address and Password is your password. Leave Custom Container Folder empty.
  7. Under Outgoing Mail (SMTP), set Server to ljpc.email, Port to 465 and Security to SSL / TLS. Again, Username and Password are your full email address and your password.
  8. Make sure Allow insecure SSL is unticked in both columns. ljpc.email has a valid certificate, so your connection is fully encrypted without it.
  9. Click Connect Account. Mailspring tests the connection and shows Adding your account to Mailspring…. For your first account it then asks whether you want a reading pane. Pick the layout you like and click Looks Good!.

When you change the Port, Mailspring adjusts the security setting to match: 993 and 465 go with SSL / TLS, 587 goes with STARTTLS. Never pick 143 or 25, because Mailspring then switches security to None, which means no encryption.

Mailspring supports IMAP only, not POP3. That is the protocol we recommend anyway: with IMAP your email stays on the server, so all your devices and webmail show the same messages and folders. Settings for other apps and devices are in set up your email on your phone, tablet and computer.

With LJPc hosting, every domain uses the same server name: ljpc.email. Your connection is routed to the server that holds your mailbox, and if our mail server goes down, a second server takes over automatically. You set up Mailspring once and it keeps working.

Mailspring connection errors and how to fix them

What you seeWhat to do
Authentication Error - Check your username and password.Check that Username in both columns is your full email address and that the password is correct. Test it in webmail at ljpc.email. If that fails too, set a new password in the customer portal.
Connection Error - Unable to connect to the server / port you provided.Check that Server in both columns says ljpc.email, not imap.yourcompany.com or smtp.yourcompany.com. Check the ports: 993 for incoming and 465 for outgoing. If sending fails on one particular network, switch the outgoing port to 587 with STARTTLS.
Certificate ErrorCheck that you entered ljpc.email and no other server name. Leave Allow insecure SSL unticked: with the right server name the certificate is valid.
Your account shows Cannot authenticateYour password has most likely changed. Enter the new password as described in the next section.
ljpc.email no longer loads on your network, other websites doWhen a device keeps signing in with a wrong password, we block that internet connection for half an hour after many failed attempts. That keeps intruders away from your mailbox. Update the password in Mailspring and on your other devices; after half an hour the connection works again. If a device tried an address that does not exist, for example because of a typo, the block lasts longer and we lift it for you. Read more in what is fail2ban.

Changed your password? Update it in Mailspring

You set a new password for your email address yourself in the customer portal:

  1. Sign in and choose Services and then Sites in the menu.
  2. Click the site with the domain of your email address.
  3. In the Email addresses block, click the key icon next to your address, enter a new password of at least 8 characters twice and click Save.

Then enter the new password in Mailspring:

  1. Open Preferences. On Windows, click the menu button with three lines at the top of the window and choose Preferences. On a Mac, choose Mailspring and then Preferences in the menu bar; on Linux, Edit and then Preferences. The shortcut is Ctrl and the comma key, or Cmd and the comma key on a Mac.
  2. Open the Accounts tab and click your account on the left.
  3. Click Update Connection Settings... to open the two-column settings screen.
  4. Enter the new password under Password in both columns and click Connect Account.

Do the same on your phone and other devices so they keep receiving your email.

Add another email account to Mailspring

Mailspring handles several addresses at once. Open Preferences, go to Accounts and click the plus sign below the account list, or choose Add Account... in the menu. Then follow the steps above from choosing IMAP / SMTP.

Sender name and signature

  • Sender name: open Preferences, go to Accounts, click your account and edit Sender Name. That is the name recipients see.
  • Signature: open Preferences and go to the Signatures tab. Create a signature with the plus sign, fill in your details and choose the account it is added to by default.

Remove an account from Mailspring

  1. Open Preferences and go to the Accounts tab.
  2. Select the account and click the minus sign below the list.

This only removes the account from Mailspring on this computer. Your email address still exists and your messages remain on the server, so you still see them in webmail and on your other devices. To delete an address for good, use the customer portal as described in create an email address in the customer portal.

Your username in both columns is your full email address, and Allow insecure SSL stays unticked.

Yes. The Mailspring download page offers one Windows build that runs on Intel and AMD PCs as well as ARM laptops. There are also builds for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Linux.

Why can I not create an email address in Mailspring?
