Setting up your email means connecting your LJPc hosting email address to a mail program or app, so you can read and send messages on your computer, phone or tablet. This guide explains exactly which IMAP and SMTP settings you need, how to set up your email in Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird and the Gmail app, and how to sign in straight away through webmail. The settings are the same for every LJPc hosting customer.

The settings you need

When you set up your email, you enter an incoming server (for receiving mail) and an outgoing server (for sending mail). Your username is always your full email address and your password is the password of your email account. Incoming mail is routed to the correct server through your domain's MX record, which we take care of, so there is nothing for you to configure there.

Always use an encrypted connection (SSL/TLS) for both incoming and outgoing mail. Some programs fill in these details automatically once you enter your email address and password. If that does not happen, or something is not right, enter the settings manually using the values above.

IMAP or POP3: which should you choose?

IMAP and POP3 are two ways to collect incoming mail. The main difference is where your mail is kept.

IMAP keeps your mail on the server. Your program shows a copy, and everything you do (reading, moving or deleting a message) is synced with the server. If you use more than one device, you see the same mailboxes and the same read or unread messages everywhere. For almost everyone, IMAP is the best choice.

POP3 downloads your mail to one device and, by default, removes the messages from the server afterwards. Your mail then lives in a single place and does not sync between devices. POP3 is only useful if you deliberately work on a single device, for example to build a local archive.

Set up your email in Outlook (Windows and Mac)

Outlook comes in a new and a classic version. The steps are similar; the key is to choose a manual IMAP setup.

  1. Open Outlook. In the new Outlook, click the gear icon (Settings) at the top right and go to Accounts, Email accounts, Add account. In the classic Outlook, choose File, Add Account.
  2. Enter your full email address. In the classic Outlook, then choose Advanced options and tick "Let me set up my account manually".
  3. Choose IMAP as the account type. If Outlook does not detect the settings automatically, choose Advanced setup to enter the servers yourself.
  4. For the incoming server, enter ljpc.email with port 993 and encryption SSL/TLS.
  5. For the outgoing server (SMTP), enter ljpc.email with port 465 (SSL/TLS) or 587 (STARTTLS).
  6. Use your full email address as the username and the password of your email account. Finish and let Outlook test the connection.

Set up your email in Apple Mail (iPhone, iPad and Mac)

On iPhone and iPad, you set up your email through the Settings app.

  1. Open Settings and go to Apps, Mail (on older iOS versions: Settings, Mail). Tap Mail Accounts and then Add Account.
  2. Choose Other at the bottom and tap Add Mail Account.
  3. Enter your name, your full email address, your password and a description, then tap Next.
  4. Choose IMAP at the top.
  5. For Incoming Mail Server, enter the host name ljpc.email, with your full email address as the username and your password.
  6. For Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), enter ljpc.email again, with the same email address and password. Tap Next and then Save.

On a Mac, open Mail and go to Mail, Settings, Accounts. Click the plus button, choose Other Mail Account and enter the same details. If the connection fails, check that port 993 (IMAP) and port 465 or 587 (SMTP) are set with SSL.

Set up your email in Thunderbird

  1. Open Thunderbird, click the menu (the three lines) and choose New, Existing Mail Account.
  2. Enter your name, your full email address and your password.
  3. Click Configure manually.
  4. Set the incoming server to IMAP, host name ljpc.email, port 993, connection security SSL/TLS and authentication Normal password.
  5. Set the outgoing server (SMTP) to ljpc.email, port 465 (SSL/TLS) or 587 (STARTTLS) and authentication Normal password.
  6. Use your full email address as the username, click Re-test and then Done.

Set up your email in the Gmail app (Android)

With the Gmail app on Android, you can read the email from your own domain alongside your Gmail.

  1. Open the Gmail app and tap your profile picture at the top right.
  2. Tap Add another account and choose Other.
  3. Enter your full email address and tap Next.
  4. Choose Personal (IMAP).
  5. Enter your password and set the incoming server to ljpc.email with port 993 and SSL/TLS.
  6. Set the outgoing server to ljpc.email with port 465 or 587 and make sure that sign-in (authentication) is required. Finish the steps.

Read your email through webmail

If you just want to read your email without setting anything up, go to https://ljpc.email and sign in with your full email address and your account password. Webmail works in any browser and is handy when you are on someone else's device or would rather not set up a mail program. Your messages stay on the server, just as they do with IMAP.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between IMAP and POP3?

IMAP keeps your mail on the server and syncs everything between your devices, such as folders and read or unread messages. POP3 downloads your mail to one device and then removes the messages from the server by default, so they no longer sync. Choose IMAP, unless you have a specific reason to work on a single device.

Which server settings do I need?

For incoming mail, use ljpc.email with port 993 (IMAP) or 995 (POP3), each with SSL/TLS. For outgoing mail, use ljpc.email with port 465 (SSL/TLS) or 587 (STARTTLS). Your username is your full email address and your password is the one for your email account.

Why can I receive email but not send it?

Usually the authentication for the outgoing server is off, or you are using the wrong port. Turn on authentication for SMTP and use port 465 or 587 with your full email address and password. At LJPc hosting, you can only send outgoing mail with a valid login.

Do I need to turn on SSL or TLS?

Yes. Always use an encrypted connection. For incoming mail that is port 993 (IMAP) or 995 (POP3), and for outgoing mail it is port 465 (SSL/TLS) or 587 (STARTTLS). This way your email and password are sent encrypted.

Can I read my email without setting anything up?

Yes. Go to https://ljpc.email and sign in with your full email address and password. With webmail you read and send mail straight in your browser, without setting up a program.

Does my email work on more than one device at the same time?

Yes, if you use IMAP. Set up the same settings on each device with the same username and password. Your mail stays on the server and is synced everywhere.
